The 2024 NAEP scores were released on Wednesday and showed big gains for Alabama’s students. Alabama is the only state to exceed pre-pandemic scores in 4th-grade math and is one of two states to exceed pre-covid scores in 4th-grade reading, showing incredible improvement and growth from 2019 scores. This is a testament to the hard work of educators and students in our state and the continued commitment of state leaders. Now is the time to double down on strong implementation of the Literacy and Numeracy Acts to continue this growth. We are moving in the right direction for Alabama students!
For me, this is wonderful news because I was around when the NAEP scores were implemented in Alabama when working for ARI – Project for Adolescent Literacy. Many stakeholders have continually bemoaned the fact that scores were so low for a very long. This is news to celebrate and shows that many things are working in our schools!
